New Product Release

ultiline is pleased to announce another new product to it's family. The ULTRA-RIVET is an Ultrasonic Riveting machine that uses plastic rivets to hold the multilayer package in registration during lamination. This machine utilizes two ultrasonic stations that simultaneously form two plastic rivets into place. Lay-up is performed on a template that consists of four pinup pins. When the lay-up of innerlayers and prepreg is complete the operator places plastic rivets into four punched holes. The template is then introduced into the machine and activates the ultrasonic heads.

The innerlayers are held in registration on four pins of the template (usually aligned on the four centerline slots punched in the innerlayers on the Optiline P.E. Post Etch Punch) while the rivets are being formed.

Features:

  • Tooling is used to compress the package so that the plastic rivet heads can be formed below the top surface of the innerlayer stack up. This prevents damage to the separators.

  • Utilizes a template for pinning the layers in registration, the template is then used to align the registered package of innerlayers and prepreg under the two ultrasonic riveting stations.

  • Each ultrasonic rivet station includes an ultrasonic transducer and an ultrasonic horn to form the rivet head

    Operation:
    1. The innerlayers and prepreg are laid up on a stainless steel template with tooling pins to match the punched registration pattern (usually 4 slots).
    2. The plastic rivets are placed in the rivet holes punched in the innerlayers from the top with the head of the rivet up.
    3. The template is placed on the support table of the machine and banked into stop pins on either side of the rivet stations.
    4. A foot switch is activated which cycles the two ultrasonic heads simultaneously.
    5. Actual time to form the two rivets is under two seconds.

    System includes:

  • Ultrasonic two position rivet machine
  • Plastic rivet sizing machine
  • Three pin lay-up templates

he ultrasonic riveting machine is supplied with a rivet sizing machine which allows the customer to purchase and stock only one size rivet. The success of the Ultra-Rivet System is the sizing of the rivets. Since we are forming a head on the non headed side of the rivet the amount of plastic must be enough to fill the mold cavity. If there is too much plastic (too long a rivet) the head will be too large and will not produce clean edges. Exact sizing of rivets insures better accuracy on any thickness package and permits rivets to be used on thin multilayer packages

    Features:
    1. An Automatic feeding system which includes a vibratoy bowl and feeding track. One size rivets are fed into the bowl in large quantities. The bowl will then orient the rivets in the right position and then feed them down a track to the pick and place station.
    2. The pick and place station utilizes a set of air operated jaws which are air driven along a ball bearing set of ways. They pick up the rivet from the end of the vibratory track and shuttle it to the sizing station.
    3. The sizing station clamps the rivet, between one stationary and one moveable jaw, in the correct position for the cutting tool.
    4. The cutting tool is especially designed to remove the exact amount required from the rivet. In the same cut it also machines a chamfer on the leading edge for easy insertion into the circuit board and a center relief to aid in proper material flow when the rivet is being ultrasonically formed.
    5. A vacuum is provided to remove the trimmed material and a sliding floor is incorporated to allow the trimmed rivets to drop through to a collection area.
